Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Signs of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

If you suffer from extreme worry or stress that's much more intense than the everyday anxiety that many people experience, then you may be experiencing the onset of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Those diagnosed as suffering from GAD will have experienced this extreme form of stress or anxiety for at least 6 months.

Are you more irritable than most people?
Do you find it difficult to relax or have a good night's sleep?
Do you normally worry more than others about your finances, your health, friends or those close to you?
Do you tend to fret excessively about situations and circumstances even when everything appears to be going smoothly?
If you answered "Yes" to these questions then you may have GAD. This anxiety disorder often accompanies depression and/or substance abuse.

If you have Generalised Anxiety Disorder you may not only suffer from the emotional and mental symptoms of anxiety as described above, but you may also have some of the physical signs of GAD such as headaches, muscle weakness, muscle tension or exhaustion.

How Widespread Is Generalised Anxiety Disorder?

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is thought to affect approximately 3 - 4% of the UK population at any given time. An estimated 4 million Americans aged 18-54 are sufferers (just under 3%)

Women are more likely to suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder than men. This extreme form of anxiety most often first occurs during adolescence or even earlier. However, it may start later in life as well.

What Causes Generalised Anxiety Disorder?

It appears to be more extreme during times of stress, but it would appear that some families may be more susceptible to it than others.
