Have a phobia? Then let me help you overcome your fear or phobia using advanced hypnotherapy and some other very effective techniques. You may have seen celebrity hypnotherapist Paul McKenna on national television using hypnosis and some of these techniques with amazing success.

Why it's never too late

Even if you have a severe phobia that has existed for years, you can be treated just as easily as someone with a less intense, more recently acquired phobia. Eliminating one phobia can often result in your other phobias vanishing of their own accord.

Let's take one of my clients as an example:
'Margaret' had suffered from multiple phobias since early childhood. This included a fear of water. She came to me in order to help her cope with her intense fear of flying. Even the thought of flying now resulted in her experiencing many of the symptoms of a panic attack. After 3 hours of therapy she felt fairly confident that she had at last overcome her fear. Several weeks later she wrote the following:

"Just a short note to say many thanks for all your help, and to say that I have now taken a flight with [my husband] in the aircraft and enjoyed every minute. I have also been swimming once, and hope to go every week from now on. My next big task is to try the new bike which [my husband] bought for me, and I am sure I can overcome my concerns about cycling, using your exercises."

"I never thought it possible in my wildest dreams that one day I would be going up in a 4 seater aircraft and actually enjoying the experience."

What is a phobia?

You may feel anxious or afraid from time to time, but that doesn't mean that you have a phobia.

A phobia is an excessive, illogical fear of a thing, person, place or situation.

A phobia can hold you back in life, and chip away at your self confidence and self esteem; it can cause embarrassment and make you feel stupid.

According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, phobias affect about one in 10 of us at some time in our lives, but only a tiny proportion of phobia sufferers ever seek help.

Other sources suggest that there may be an astounding 16 million phobia sufferers in Britain.

A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear, and you can have a phobia about absolutely anything.

Some people have a phobia of buttons; others are driven to a state of fear and panic by the very mention of certain foodstuffs. Common phobias include fear of flying, fear of insects, fear of water, fear of snakes and fear of social situations. Phobias are extremely common. Sometimes a phobia can start for no apparent reason; sometimes a phobia appears after a stressful event; and sometimes a phobia can develop from an attempt to make sense of an unexpected and intense feeling of anxiety or panic.

There are three main types of phobias:

A specific phobia is an extreme illogical fear of something that we realise poses little or no actual danger. Examples of this include an irrational and intense fear of bees, needles or water.

Social phobias are characterized by an overpowering and disabling fear of social situations. Such fear stems from a dread of embarrassment, rejection, humiliation or of being observed. This is much more than just shyness.

Agoraphobia is a heightened fear of situations where the person feels that there would be no means of escape. They fear that if they were to suffer a panic attack, or become ill etc. they would be trapped with all eyes focused on them. Agoraphobia may affect people in both open and enclosed spaces. Agoraphobics need to know that there is somewhere safe they may retreat to, if they develop feelings of unease.
If you suffer from a fear or phobia which is preventing you from going forward in life, or simply making things difficult for you, please don't be afraid to ask for help.
