Fears and phobias - What is a phobia?

The definition of a phobia

A phobia isn't just the normal level of worry or fear that we all experience from time to time. You may feel anxious or frightened sometimes, but that doesn't mean that you have a phobia.

It's much more than just feeling worried, upset or anxious every so often.

A phobia could be defined as an intense, persistent and seemingly illogical fear of a thing, person, place or situation. It's an extreme fear of particular circumstances or objects that most of us would normally think of as utterly harmless.

In other words a phobia is an intense or irrational fear that you believe you can't control - despite usually knowing that your reactions are probably out of all proportion to the actual threat. If you have a phobia, or know someone who has, it can seem rather strange, puzzling or even embarrassing.

The word phobia is derived from the Greek word for fear

The word phobia is derived from the Greek word “phobos” which means "fear". Fear, of course, is a natural response to situations that pose real danger. It's a method of self-preservation. Fear is quite rational, whereas a phobic response is an irrational and emotional reaction.

You can have a phobia about absolutely anything.  Some people have a phobia of buttons; others are driven to a state of fear and panic by the very mention of certain foodstuffs. Common phobias include fear of flying, fear of insects, fear of water, fear of snakes and fear of social situations (social phobia).

Phobias can disrupt your life

Phobias are extremely common and, like other anxiety disorders, can make your day to day life miserable. Symptoms can range from mild anxiety to full blown panic attacks. For some phobia suffers the intensity and anxiety of their fears prevent them from living a normal life.

A phobia can hold you back in life and chip away at your self confidence and self esteem; it can cause embarrassment and make you feel stupid.
