Fears and phobias - What causes a phobia?

Have you ever wondered about the cause of your phobia?

The truth is that nobody really knows for sure the cause of phobias, but scientists now believe that both our environment and our genetic make-up may play a part in the likelihood of developing a phobia. Scientists are currently carrying out research to discover which genes may affect anxiety, fear and the tendency towards phobias.

Scientist believe that biochemical factors may be involved

Scientists think that biochemical factors may be partly involved in the onset of phobias. Research currently under way links the amygdala to their development. The amygdala (pronounced “ah-mig-da-la”) is a small structure in the brain that is thought to control our response to fear. It's responsible for our the “fight or flight” response and so plays a major role in phobias (including agoraphobia and social phobia) and other panic disorders.

A phobia can start for no apparent reason

Sometimes a phobia can seem to start for no apparent known reason (although hypnotherapy can often pinpoint a specific underlying event or situation that has long been forgotten); sometimes a phobia appears after a stressful event; and sometimes a phobia can develop from an attempt to make sense of an unexpected and intense feeling of anxiety or panic.

Children are more likely to have phobias if their parents are stressed or anxious

Children whose parents are prone to anxiety disorders, are more likely themselves to become stressed or suffer from phobias. This may be caused by the child observing anxiety or phobic responses by others  -  a process called observational learning or social modeling.  Or such children may simply develop phobias because of genetic tendencies towards suffering from stress and anxiety.
