Hypnotherapy & hypnosis - Hypnosis explained

What is hypnosis?

People are intrigued by hypnosis. Some are wary of it. Whatever your ideas about hypnosis, I'm sure you'll agree that it's a fascinating subject.  Hypnosis has been given many definitions over the years - and has been frequently misunderstood. This is probably due to the silly things we see people doing in the stage hypnosis shows that we watch on television!

In fact, everyone has experienced hypnosis. Hypnosis is a completely safe, naturally occurring state that you enter into every single day of your life. Does that surprise you? You may well be thinking that you've never been hypnotised. In fact, you have, although you probably didn't call it hypnosis! If you thought that hypnosis is all about swaying pendulums, magic, mind control, unconsciousness or sleep, then I'm sorry, but you've been watching too many old films or stage hypnosis shows!

Hypnosis isn't about mind control or magic

If it's not about mind control or magic, what is hypnosis really all about? Have you ever been so focused on what you were doing that you lost track of the time or were oblivious to what was going on in the background?  - Perhaps when you were absorbed in a good book or watching a film.  Maybe you were driving and afterwards you couldn't remember part of the journey. Or have you ever found yourself daydreaming?  If you have - and of course you have - then you've experienced hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a normal everyday state where your focus is turned inwards and whatever's going on around you becomes unimportant.  In simple terms, hypnosis is a normal state of focused attention.

Here's what Dr. David Spiegel, Associate Chair of Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine has to say about hypnosis:

Hypnosis is a very normal, everyday state

So, hypnosis isn't at all about mind control. It's a very normal, everyday state that we enter into as easily and naturally as daydreaming!

Hypnosis is simply a technique.  On it’s own it's not a therapy. It becomes a therapy, known as hypnotherapy when we combine it with other therapeutic skills. Hypnotherapy is sometimes called clinical hypnosis or medical hypnosis.

Hypnosis can be self-induced. Not surprisingly, this is called self-hypnosis. The hypnotic state can also be brought on by responding to someone else's suggestions - usually suggestions made by a hypnotist or hypnotherapist.

You can choose to believe the image of hypnosis that many people have - the image that stage hypnosis has given it. Or instead you can choose to experience the incredible therapeutic benefits of hypnotherapy, hypno-analysis and self-hypnosis.
